51 Home Invasion Statistics on Burglary, Break-Ins, and Residential Risk

Home invasion is not a single harmonized international statistical category. The available measures instead include residential burglary, break-and-enter, residential robbery, and household property victimization, so each figure below keeps its geography, period, unit, and definition visible.

Key Home Invasion Statistics

The most broadly useful figures in this overview are:

  • In 2020, 565,842 estimated burglary offenses occurred at residences in the United States.
  • In 2021, 499,732 estimated burglary offenses occurred at residences in the United States.
  • In 2022, 482,358 estimated burglary offenses occurred at residences in the United States.
  • In 2023, 449,957 estimated burglary offenses occurred at residences in the United States.
  • In 2024, 405,776 estimated burglary offenses occurred at residences in the United States.
  • In 2023, 13,637,450 property victimizations were recorded in U.S. households by the NCVS.
  • In 2023, the U.S. household property-victimization rate was 102.2 per 1,000 households overall.

  • In 2023, the U.S. household property-victimization rate was 98.1 per 1,000 suburban households.
  • In 2023, the U.S. household property-victimization rate was 56.5 per 1,000 rural households.
  • In 2023, police received reports for 43% of U.S. burglary/trespassing victimizations measured by the NCVS.
  • In 2023, Canada recorded 130,748 police-reported breaking-and-entering incidents.
  • In 2023, Canada’s police-reported breaking-and-entering rate was 326 per 100,000 population.
  • From 1998 to 2023, Canada’s breaking-and-entering rate fell 72%.
  • In 2023, residential break-ins accounted for 46% of Canadian break-and-enters.
  • In 2024, rural Canada recorded 22.8 residential breaking-and-entering-with-violence incidents per 100,000 population under a broad proxy.
  • In 2024, urban Canada recorded 10.5 residential breaking-and-entering-with-violence incidents per 100,000 population under the same broad proxy.
  • In 2024, rural Canada recorded 8.0 residential robberies per 100,000 population under a narrow proxy.
  • In 2024, urban Canada recorded 7.4 residential robberies per 100,000 population under the narrow proxy.
  • In the year ending September 2024, police recorded 260,728 burglaries in England and Wales.

The FBI’s residential-location series is a useful scale measure, but it is broader than an occupied-home invasion. It counts estimated burglary offenses occurring at residences, whether or not residents were present.

Year Estimated burglary offenses at residences Measurement
2020 565,842 FBI estimate
2021 499,732 FBI estimate
2022 482,358 FBI estimate
2023 449,957 FBI estimate
2024 405,776 FBI estimate

Source: Summary of Reported Crimes in the Nation, 2024, Figure 18, page 32.

The same FBI figure estimated 452,896 burglary offenses at non-residence locations in 2020, 377,174 in 2021, 427,954 in 2022, and 373,766 in 2024. Non-residence includes locations such as stores and offices, so this is a comparison category rather than a home-invasion measure.

The residential estimates declined across every listed year, from 565,842 in 2020 to 405,776 in 2024. These remain estimates from the FBI’s UCR reporting system, and residence location should not be treated as a narrower count of unlawful entry while occupants were home.

Home Invasion Data by Household Location and Police Reporting

The 2023 National Crime Victimization Survey measures nonfatal household property victimization, including incidents reported and not reported to police. Its categories are broader than home invasion, but they show why police counts alone do not describe all household experiences.

The NCVS recorded 13,637,450 total property victimizations in U.S. households in 2023, with an overall rate of 102.2 victimizations per 1,000 households. Property crime includes burglary/trespassing, motor-vehicle theft, and other theft, not only residential intrusion.

U.S. household location, 2023 Property-victimization rate Unit
Urban 192.3 Per 1,000 households
Suburban 98.1 Per 1,000 households
Rural 56.5 Per 1,000 households
All households 102.2 Per 1,000 households

Police received reports for 30% of all 2023 NCVS property victimizations. For the closer burglary/trespassing category, the reporting share was 43%, while motor-vehicle-theft victimizations had a 72% reporting share.

The comparison shows why the 43% figure should not be read as a home-invasion reporting rate. NCVS burglary/trespassing is the closest listed category to an occupied-home invasion, but it is not identical to one, and the survey covers nonfatal victimization rather than police incidents.

Canada’s police-reported breaking-and-entering series provides a long-run view of a broad offense category. In 2023, Canada recorded 130,748 breaking-and-entering incidents, equal to 326 incidents per 100,000 population.

The rate fell 5% from 2022 to 2023 and was 72% lower in 2023 than 25 years earlier. Breaking and entering represented 15% of the total value of Canada’s Crime Severity Index in 2023, a contribution that reflects crime volume and severity weighting rather than the share of incidents that were home invasions.

Year Canada break-and-enter rate per 100,000
1998 1,163
2007 704
2019 429
2023 328

Residential break-ins accounted for 46% of Canada’s break-and-enters in 2023. That residential share is broader than occupied-home invasion and is based on police-reported UCR data.

Home Invasion Statistics in Rural and Urban Areas

Statistics Canada reports two Canadian proxies for 2024. The broad measure covers breaking and entering into a private residence accompanied by a selected violent offense; the narrow measure covers robbery occurring in a private residence.

2024 Canadian measure Rural areas Urban areas Unit
Residential breaking and entering with violence 22.8 10.5 Per 100,000 population
Residential robbery 8.0 7.4 Per 100,000 population

Source: Police-reported crime in rural and urban areas in the Canadian provinces, 2024.

The broad proxy had a rural-to-urban difference of 12.3 incidents per 100,000 population, derived by subtracting the published rounded rates. Rural Canada’s broad rate was about 2.2 times the urban rate, also calculated from the rounded figures.

For the narrow residential-robbery proxy, the rural-to-urban difference was 0.6 incidents per 100,000 population, and the rural rate was about 1.1 times the urban rate. Neither proxy is a definitive occupied-home-invasion count: the broad measure includes a selected violent offense, while the narrow measure is residential robbery.

Residential Burglary Comparison: Canada and the United States

The comparative Statistics Canada analysis uses comparable police-reported UCR categories, not dedicated home-invasion rates. The source excludes U.S. 2021 from trend analysis because the reporting-system transition made estimates noncomparable.

Year Canada rate United States rate Unit
1998 1,163 863 Per 100,000 population
2007 704 734 Per 100,000 population
2013 446 612 Per 100,000 population
2017 437 430 Per 100,000 population
2020 363 310 Per 100,000 population
2022 342 272 Per 100,000 population
2023 328 249 Per 100,000 population

Source: Trends in police-reported crime in Canada and the United States: A comparative analysis.

The published comparative analysis reports that from 2011 to 2023, the break-and-enter rate fell 62% in Canada and 183% in the United States. That percentage is retained as reported by the source; the U.S. series excludes 2021 because of the reporting transition.

Residential break-ins represented 53% of U.S. break-and-enters in 2023. Separately, about 13% of Canadian robberies and 16% of U.S. robberies occurred in private dwellings in the comparative 2023 analysis; robbery location is not the same measure as unlawful entry or burglary.

In England and Wales, police recorded 260,728 burglaries in the year ending September 2024, down 4% from the previous year. The total includes residential and non-residential burglary, so it is broader than an occupied-home-invasion measure.

Police-recorded burglary was 71% lower than in the year ending March 2003, although the long-run comparison uses police-recorded total burglary and should be read with changes in reporting context in mind. For scale comparison, police recorded 492,914 shoplifting offences and 375,048 vehicle offences in the year ending September 2024; vehicle offences fell 6% year over year.

The Crime Survey for England and Wales asks household residents aged 16 and over about selected crimes experienced during the previous 12 months. That survey design is measurement context rather than a prevalence estimate in this overview, and its household victimization coverage should not be combined directly with police-recorded offense totals.
