53 Security Technology Statistics on Adoption, Industry Scale, and Outcomes

Security technology spans consumer cameras, monitoring services, public-safety evidence systems, facial recognition, and the people who operate them. The figures below keep those categories separate and identify the measurement period, geography, population, and limitations for each statistic.

Home-Camera Security Technology Statistics: Platforms, Accounts, and Subscriptions

Consumer security technology can be measured through shipments, accounts, paid subscriptions, recurring revenue, and company financial results. These measures describe different stages of adoption and should not be treated as one installed-base total.

Arlo measure Period Reported figure
Smart security devices shipped Through December 31, 2024 More than 37.4 million
Cumulative registered accounts December 31, 2024 Approximately 10.8 million
Cumulative paid subscribers December 31, 2024 4.6 million
Annual recurring revenue 2024 $257.3 million

Source: Arlo Technologies, Inc. 2024 Form 10-K. Arlo’s shipment figure is cumulative worldwide, while its account figure covers more than 100 countries; cumulative accounts and paid subscribers are not necessarily active households or average active subscribers.

Arlo reported total revenue of $510.9 million in 2024, compared with $491.2 million in 2023. Product revenue decreased $22.1 million, or 7.6%, in 2024 versus 2023, while service gross profit rose to $188.385 million from $148.288 million, a 27.0% increase.

The same filing reported $73.183 million in 2024 research-and-development expense, up 6.6% from 2023, and $73.723 million in sales-and-marketing expense, up 11.5%. These are company expense categories, not direct measures of camera performance or consumer welfare.

Security Technology Industry Statistics: Monitoring, Installation, and Distribution

Monitoring companies and distributors provide a broader view of the industry, but their reported categories include services and products beyond cameras.

Company and measure 2022 2023 2024
ADT total revenue $4.381904B $4.652824B $4.898446B
ADT monitoring and related services $4.053048B $4.178998B $4.293477B
ADT installation, product, and other $328.856M $473.826M $604.969M
ADT recurring monthly revenue metric $3.942567B $4.069921B $4.177428B

Source: ADT Inc. 2024 Form 10-K. ADT’s recurring monthly revenue metric is presented annually and is not a monthly amount despite its label.

ADT served approximately 6.4 million security-monitoring service subscribers on December 31, 2024. Its monitoring category includes related services, and its installation, product, and other category is combined rather than camera-only.

Resideo reported $6.761 billion in consolidated net revenue in 2024, up $519 million, or 8.3%, from 2023. Its Products and Solutions Safety and Security revenue was $885 million in 2024, compared with $965 million in 2023 and $913 million in 2022.

Resideo’s ADI Global Distribution revenue was $4.197 billion in 2024, including $3.680 billion in the Americas and $517 million internationally. ADI revenue spans low-voltage and other products, so it is not a pure security-technology measure.

Public-Safety Security Technology Statistics: Cameras, Software, and Evidence Systems

Axon’s results combine TASER products, cameras, sensors, cloud services, and other public-safety technology. They show the scale of an integrated evidence ecosystem rather than a camera-only market.

Axon measure Period Reported figure
Total revenue 2024 $2.1 billion, up 33.4% year over year
Cloud & Services revenue Q4 2024 $230 million, 40% of quarterly revenue
Sensors & Other revenue Q4 2024 $124 million, up 18% year over year
Body cameras shipped 2024 300,000
Total software users End of 2024 More than 1 million
Future contracted bookings End of 2024 $10.1 billion

Source: Axon Enterprise 2024 Annual Results and Axon Enterprise, Inc. 2024 Form 10-K.

Axon reported fourth-quarter 2024 revenue of $575 million, up 34% year over year. In that quarter, TASER revenue was $221 million, up 37%, and Cloud & Services revenue grew 41% to $230 million.

During 2024, Axon shipped more than 200,000 TASER devices and more than 9 million cartridges in addition to 300,000 body cameras. Annual bookings exceeded $5 billion, but bookings and future contracted bookings are orders or contracts rather than recognized revenue.

Facial-Recognition Security Technology Statistics: Accuracy, Bias, and Federal Use

Facial-recognition figures require careful definitions because test performance, demographic differentials, agency use, and search volume measure different things.

NIST’s 2019 FRVT Part 3 study evaluated 189 algorithms from 99 developers. Its demographic-effects program used four photograph collections containing more than 18 million images of more than 8 million people; those collections were test datasets, not population-prevalence estimates.

NIST found that false-positive rates across demographic groups often varied by factors of 10 to beyond 100 times. False-negative demographic differentials often varied by factors below 3, but that was a frequent pattern rather than a bound applying to every algorithm, task, dataset, or demographic comparison.

Federal facial-recognition measure Population and period Figure
Agencies reporting use 24 surveyed U.S. federal agencies, fiscal 2020 18
Agencies with law-enforcement officers reporting criminal-investigation use 42 surveyed agencies, 2021 survey 14
Nongovernment services identified Selected agencies, October 2019–March 2022 4
Searches with available data Selected agencies, October 2019–March 2022 Approximately 60,000

The Rialto, California body-worn-camera study examined a police department serving approximately 100,000 residents across 28.5 square miles. The department had 115 sworn officers and 42 non-sworn staff in the study context, and every frontline officer participated; 54 officers were included with shifts serving as the unit of analysis and randomization.

The experiment began in February 2012 and lasted one year. Its staffing and geography describe a specific trial setting, not a national adoption rate or universal outcome.

National crime figures provide context but do not establish that security technology caused changes. The FBI estimated that U.S. violent crime decreased 3.0% from 2022 to 2023, including an estimated 11.6% decrease in murder and non-negligent manslaughter, a 9.4% decrease in the revised rape category, and a 2.8% decrease in aggravated assault.

The FBI reported hate-crime incidents decreasing 0.6%, from 10,687 in 2022 to 10,627 in 2023, in a comparable dataset covering agencies with six or more common months or two or more common quarters of data.

Security Technology Workforce, Privacy, and Consumer-Protection Statistics

Security technology operates alongside a large protective-services workforce. BLS counted 1,251,760 security guards and gambling-surveillance officers in the United States in May 2024, including 1,241,770 security guards.

Security guards had a mean hourly wage of $20.62 and a mean annual wage of $42,890 in May 2024. These are mean wages, not medians or total employer labor costs.

BLS also counted 46,340 transportation security screeners, whose mean hourly wage was $29.73. Transportation security screeners are a distinct occupation from security guards.

Privacy and consumer-protection enforcement adds another measurable dimension. In April 2024, the FTC sent more than $5.6 million in Ring-related refunds to U.S. consumers and reported 117,044 PayPal payments to consumers with certain Ring devices.

Those payments arose from an enforcement settlement and covered consumers meeting eligibility conditions; they are not a measure of Ring’s total user base or the size of the security-camera market.
